What to expect during the course
We will send you each unit one at a time though you may not always start on unit 601. If you do however start on 601, this is the largest and most difficult unit so please be aware that not all of the units are of this size. At the end of each unit there is a final timed assignment for which please see below the full information on timed assignment.
You will note that the core units are broken down into 4 parts:
Outcomes Criteria
Tasks
Questions
Skills Booklets
Outcomes Criteria: These give you an overview of what you will be covering in the outcomes of the unit. For example, unit 601 has 5 outcomes in total. You initially complete outcomes 1 and 2 which are questions A(1) and B(1,2 &3) along with the associated tasks, before moving onto unit 601 outcomes 3,4,5. You then complete the final timed assignment.
Tasks:
The tasks are there for personal revision and study. They are to be completed and saved in your learning folder - Learner File. This is simply your own file set up on your PC to save all of your tasks and reference material. It is very important that this file can be placed on memory stick as you will be able to access this during your final timed assignments. The tasks need to be completed as your first action to the course prior to any outcomes or questions to give you the knowledge and content / context to answer the outcomes and questions successfully.
Questions:
These need to be completed after you have finished all the tasks in order for you to demonstrate you have learned the relevant information. The questions will cover the outcome criteria noted at the top of each unit. The questions are mentor marked and go towards the mentor moving you forward to completing the next outcomes for the unit and then the end of unit timed assignment. Please be aware that the questions are heavily research based as is the whole unit and need to have all expanded reference points included.
Skills Booklet: Within your first unit you will be required to complete work relating to a skills booklet. This is to aid with the assignment writing to enable you to move onto the next outcomes and onto the rest of the units.

What to expect from your mentor
Your mentor is there to help, support and mark your work throughout your course. They work at slightly different time-frames throughout the week as they are all qualified trainers and train / work during office hours alongside mentoring so are not always in front of their computer to give you instant feedback.
As a guide
Response to query - Your mentor will respond to any query relating to the course, questions or material within 48 hours.
Marking of unit work - During non-exam season your assignments will be marked and returned with full feedback within 5 working days
During the 4 weeks prior and up to exam seasons which are:
• February
• June
• November
All work will be marked and returned within 10 working days.
Please be aware these are the longest time-frames you can expect work back, quite often you will get responses to your queries and marked work returned a lot quicker.
Please note that if your mentor is on annual leave there will be an additional delay but you will always be informed of this prior to your mentor going away. If a mentor is away for longer than a two-week period you will be assigned a temporary mentor for the interim period.
Contacting Your Mentor
This is a distance learning course which means your mentor is 'virtual'. All contact is via email with your mentor. This is for two main reasons:
You can check back on answers to questions to aid with exams, revision and assignments.
Students study at variable times, from early morning to late into the night dependent on when their spare study time falls. To give students continuity it is better to have the same mentor throughout a unit and as you will appreciate this mentor cannot work 24/7. Having all communications via email means that queries can be sent through when a student is studying and can be responded to when their assigned mentor is completing their mentor work.
Timed Assignments
The timed assignments occur at the end of each unit and there are 6 in total. 2 weeks prior to completing your timed assignment you will receive a timed assignment
summary sheet which outlines what you will be covering during your timed assignment to ensure you have the right resources to hand and to allow you to do further study.
During your timed assignment, you can have with you:
Learners File for all your reference material
English dictionary
Access to the internet
During your timed assignment, you can:Take toilet breaks
Take breaks in-between the 2/3 tasks on your timed assignments when tasks are released individually by the invigilator to allow you to take time for refreshments
Timed assignment times:
601 - up to 6 hours - 3 tasks so can be done in three slots
602 - up to 6 hours - 3 tasks so can be done in three slots
603 - up to 6 hours - 3 tasks so can be done in three slots
604 - up to 5 hours - 2 tasks so can be done in two slots
609 - up to 5 hours - 2 tasks so can be done in two slots
615 - up to 5 hours - 2 tasks so can be done in two slots
We will only enter you in for your timed assignment when you have reached end of unit stage, unless alternative arrangements have been previously agreed with your mentor.
In order to be booked in for a timed assignment you will;
Firstly, your name will be placed forward, to the office by your mentor.
Secondly, you will be contacted by the office to confirm the date, time and location of the upcoming assignment and you will be asked to confirm by email that you wish to be booked in for the timed assignment. If you are doing this in your work place we will need the name of your invigilation line manager to contact them directly and arrange a date that suits both you and them.
Your Timed assignment will then be sent directly to the person invigilating ready for you, along with complete instructions, any templates you require and postage to return the papers to us.
Resit fees
If you change your mind or cannot attend the exam (once you have confirmed) there is a re-sit fee payable.
Resit fee charges:
£30 if you have failed the exam and require to resit it.
£30 if cancelled no later than 14 working prior days to the exam / timed assignment date
£45 if cancelled within 13 days of the exam / timed assignment date.
If you cannot attend due to medical reasons we will require a medical letter to send to City and Guilds to remove the re-sit fee. Without this letter, the re-sit fee remains.
Resit fees are payable at the time of cancellation. If the fee is not received your course will be placed on hold. All fees as standard are payable via electronic invoice. If you wish to pay via cheque or bank payment please inform the office and they will.
Please note, if you are completing your timed assignment in your work place you will only be charged a resit fee for having to resit a failed timed assignment, not for rearranging a cancelled one.
Course Duration
This is a 60-week course; however, we do give students 24 months to complete the course within. If you have not completed the course within 24 months of enrolment there is a fee of £75 payable to extend this for one year. After this an additional £75 is required for each year extension. Your registration with City and Guilds lasts for three years. If you are required to extend the learning past the three years there will be a re-registration fee payable of £250 for this. This will re-register
you with City and Guilds for three further years. This is separate to the £75 extension fee.
